Roger Panetta Named to Environmental Consortium

Professor Appointed to Environmental Consortium Committee

Roger Panetta, Ph.D., professor of history at Marymount College, will work with faculty from other universities in the Hudson River Valley to help preserve the region’s biodiversity.

Roger Panetta, Ph.D., associate professor of history at Marymount College of Fordham University, has been appointed to a three-year term on the inaugural steering committee of the Environmental Consortium of Hudson Valley Colleges and Universities (http://www.environmentalconsortium.org).

The consortium—with 35 member colleges and universities—is dedicated to environmental preservation through collaboration, education and research. Panetta, co-author of The Hudson: An Illustrated Guide to the Living River (Rutgers University Press, 1996), will help create an interdisciplinary program aimed at training future environmental leaders.

“By channeling this extraordinary bank of intellect, educational talent and natural activism into innovative education and public service, the consortium will further advance knowledge and understanding of the Hudson River Valley and beyond,” said committee cochair John Cronin of the Rivers and Estuaries Center on the Hudson.

Panetta said he “hopes to approach the river in a new and fresh way” in his courses by having students “unpack the history by going into the field and observing issues firsthand.” He said that research shows that this type of experience transforms students, helping them to become “informed advocates.”
