Salvatore Receives Medal of the Italian Senate

Dominic Salvatore, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Economics, was awarded the Medal of the Italian Senate during the opening ceremony of the 2003 Pio Manzù Conference in Rimini, Italy on Oct. 19.

“Professor Salvatore’s academic contributions to the international study of economics have been immeasurable,” said Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham University. “Such dedication is a hallmark of Fordham’s academic community, and we are always delighted when the hard work and diligence of our scholars are recognized.”

The award is given in recognition of “those who, through their humanitarian and professional commitment, their wisdom and far-sightedness, have worked for the future of the earth and for the dignity of various cultures and of every form of life.”

In addition to receiving the medal, Salvatore was invited to serve as an official guest speaker during the conference, which was titled “The Economics of the Noble Path.” He took part in the workshop “Sharing Limited Resources and a Change of Course,” with a lecture on “Globalization, Growth, Poverty and Governments.” His lecture examined the process of globalization, analyzed its effect on economic growth and poverty, and indicated how globalization can be harnessed to spread its benefits more equitably around the world.

The Pio Manzù International Research Centre is a non-governmental organization of the United Nations and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. It is headed by Mikhail Gorbachev, former president of the Soviet Union, and Henry Kissinger, former U.S. Secretary of State.

Given its commitment to fostering peace and international collaboration through dialogue, the Presidents of the Italian Republic, Senate, Chamber of Deputies and Cabinet authorize the centre to award these medals. Salvatore and the other medalists were chosen by the centre’s International Scientific Committee, which submitted names for approval to the awarding body.
