Eight Notables to Receive Honorary Degrees
From Fordham

 
Fordham University will present honorary degrees to eight leaders in national security, religion, the arts, medicine, business and
government service during its 2012 commencement exercises.

John Brennan, FCRH ’77, the Obama administration’s deputy national security adviser for counterterrorism and homeland security, and this year’s commencement speaker, will receive a doctorate of humane letters, honoris causa, at the 167th commencement on Saturday, May 19, at the Rose Hill campus.

Also being awarded honorary degrees on May 19 are singer Tony Bennett, pediatrician Eugenie Doyle, MC ’43, and actress Phylicia Rashad.

Newly elevated Timothy Cardinal Dolan, archbishop of New York, was the principal celebrant and homilist at the Fordham College at Rose Hill Class of 2012’s Baccalaureate Mass, held on May 18 in the Rose Hill Gymnasium. He received a doctorate of humane letters, honoris causa, that evening.

Campion Scholars Win Prestigious Awards
Across the Disciplines

Fordham marks 2012 as another successful year for reaping prestigious awards, as dozens of graduates
and undergraduates prepare to take their studies around the world.

As of May 15, Fordham students earned 154 national and international awards, including a Cambridge Overseas Trust Scholarship and Fordham’s first Lilly Graduate Fellowship in Humanities and the Arts.

Did You Know?

The Victory Bell, mounted outside the Rose Hill Gymnasium, is from the Japanese aircraft carrier Junyo. It was given to Fordham as a gift by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz “as a Memorial to Our Dear Young Dead of World War II.” It is sounded to begin the processional of graduates during Fordham’s commencement ceremonies and after victories by Fordham athletic teams.
