Business Intelligence - 3/20/2013

If you have ever wondered how beer and diapers ended up in the same aisle at a grocery store, then you are not alone. To most people, this association may seem odd. But there is actually a very strong correlation between these two products.

Grocery stores, like all businesses, track each transaction – they collect, process and store all transactional data. This wealth of data is then put into a meaningful context in order to provide useful information.

The story about the correlation between beer and diapers sales usually goes along these lines:

A number of convenience store clerks noticed that men often bought beer at the same time they bought diapers. The store mined its reciepts and proved the clerks' observations correct. So, the store began stocking diapers next to the beer coolers, and sales skyrocketed.

“I usually get a good laugh whenever I tell that story because, to be honest, is does sound pretty ludicrous,” said Rashid Khan, Fordham University’s Director of Business Intelligence. “Organizations are always mining their data and funneling reams of information that they collect to identify trends. It’s called Business Intelligence.”

During his well-attended LearnIT session on March 20, Rashid defined Business Intelligence as a set of methodologies, processes, architecture and technologies that transform raw data into meaningful and useful information for better and more informed decision making.

“Business Intelligence aims to complement assumptions, guesswork and gut instinct with reliable facts and measureable evidence,” said Rashid. “It does not replace intuition.”

“Creating Business Intelligence solutions using best practices and proven processes, making meaningful and reliable data accessible to more people more often, and transitioning data into insight, are all part of the Fordham Business Intelligence team’s role,” added Katherine Egan,
Strategic Program Office Executive Director.

Business Services - 2/28/2013

Robert Field kicked off his Business Services LearnIT session on February 28, 2013 by asking attendees, “who wanted to be a Project Manager when they were growing up?”  No one raised their hand.

“I’m not surprised,”  said Field, Fordham University’s Director of Business Services. “Who could have possibly grown up wanting to be a Project Manager? I didn’t! My son doesn’t! He wants to be a football player.”

Ironically, though, we all become Project Managers, according to Field.  

 “It doesn’t matter if you are a football player, technologist, doctor, lawyer, police officer or whatever. We are all Project Managers,” he said. “It’s what we do every day. It’s how we plan our day, our life, our business strategy, and our budgets. It’s just a science, a methodology. It’s an efficient plan to follow key elements of a project in an effort to achieve repeatable successes.”

“In Business Services, the project manager’s role is finding the right team, giving appropriate direction and managing the working environment – while maintaining a strategic focus and staying on top of deadlines and deliverables.”

It would be worth the visit. Field is an authority on the topic, a fact that is recognized beyond the Fordham community. He was recently named to serve on the Board of Directors for the World Institute for Action Learning (WIAL – USA).

The WIAL-USA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the growth and advancement of Action Learning for various organizations. Their mission is to solve problems, cultivate productive teams and build leaders in real time. As a board member, Rob provides  general oversight, direction and support in assisting the organization fulfill its mission.

“He is perfect for this role,” said Katherine Egan, Strategic Program Office Executive Director. “He  has a strong track record for providing Fordham University community members with the resources to plan, design, build and implement technical and non-technical solutions to their needs.  He’ll be an asset to this board. His presentation was enlightening to anyone who attended."
