Fordham VPN Frequently Asked Questions
VPN is an acronym for Virtual Private Network. A VPN extends the perimeter of a secure environment based on a specific user or system's role and responsibility. In other words, Fordham’s VPN enables remote access (i.e., from off-campus sites) to secure applications and systems (e.g., Magic Service Desk Express, Ellucian International Student Management System, Banner Workflow and Library resources), giving authenticated and authorized users the same access as if they were on campus.
The VPN was implemented to provide authenticated and authorized members of the Fordham community remote access to secure services.
There are certain applications and services that must be protected and secured, such that only authenticated and authorized community members have access. Prior to the VPN implementation, these services were only available, securely, from on-campus locations. The VPN enables authenticated and authorized community members access to these specific services from remote, off-campus locations.

The Fordham IT VPN is considered clientless, because it does not require users to install software on their personal computers. Clientless VPN works from almost any computer on which you can run a browser (e.g., Internet Explorer or Safari). The VPN website launches a small Java applet that creates a secure tunnel enabling access to specified applications once authenticated.
