Card Access System

Fordham IT is deploying a card access system at Lincoln Center and Rose Hill to secure its offices and systems-related areas.

This new system utilizes RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) technology and will require an access card in addition to your Fordham picture ID.  You will need to carry this card as well as your Fordham ID card.  With this card, you will receive a four digit PIN code.  This PIN code will be needed to enter areas that require an even higher level of security than regular office space. Your PIN is specific to you and tied to the card you have been assigned.  This PIN is private and should not be shared with others.  Please do not leave the label with your PIN code attached to your card and do not write your name or code on the card.

Instructions for Use

  • Doors without keypads (reader only) - Place your card within two inches of the card reader (usually a black rectangular box with a red light.)  The reader will beep and the light will turn green when your card is read.  If you are authorized to use this doorway, the door will unlock and the light will stay green.  If you do not open the door within 6 seconds, the door will re-lock.  If the light immediately turns red, then you are not authorized for this doorway.
  • Doors with keypads (reader and keypad) - Place your card within two inches of the card reader (usually a grey rectangular box, with a 12 button pad and a red light.)  The pad will beep and the light will briefly turn green when your card is read.  Enter your four digit PIN and press the "#" key.  If you are authorized to use this doorway, the door will unlock and the light will stay green.  If you do not open the door within 6 seconds, the door will re-lock.  If the light immediately turns red, then you are not authorized for this doorway.
  • Doors with "Press to Exit" buttons - Press the button, and the door will unlock for 6 seconds.

Alarms

The following alarms are being implemented as part of the installation:

  • Force Open - If a door is forced open without proper use of an authorized access card, an alarm will sound and security will be alerted.  The alarm will not stop sounding until an authorized agent of Fordham IT has reset it.
  • Emergency Exit - If an emergency "glass break" is activated, an alarm will sound and security will be alerted.  The alarm will not stop sounding until an authorized agent of Fordham IT has reset it.
  • Hold Open - If a door is "propped" open, after two minutes an alarm will sound and security will be alerted.  This can be temporarily disabled by the Fordham IT Business Office to facilitate loading and unloading of equipment.  The alarm will continue to sound until the door is no longer held open.
  • Key Override - All doors have a key override.  This key is held by Security and should only be used in emergency situations.  If this key is used, an alarm will sound.  The alarm will not stop sounding until an authorized agent of Fordham IT has reset it.

All access attempts are logged.

If your card is ever lost, immediately contact the Fordham IT Business Office at (718) 817-3750.

Requests for access should be e-mailed to FORDHAMITOFFICE/CORPORA/FIRE by your immediate manager, and must contain your full name, FIDN, access needed and reason for request.
