Connecting to Wireless

Connect to the University Wireless Network

Hardware Requirements
  • To establish a wireless connection you will need a laptop computer or a handheld PC with an IEEE 802.11b Wi-Fi compliant wireless card (adapter)
  • Most computers purchased in the past year will have a wireless card installed. Cards can be purchased from any computer accessories supplier. The card must be installed using the software which accompanies it.
Software Requirements
  • In order to connect to the wireless network your laptop must comply with the University’s  mandatory security procedure.
  • When you have installed the necessary anti-virus and security software you will be able to access the wireless network from any of the available  access points  on campus. The default network settings should be set to DHCP. This means that upon connection you will automatically be assigned an IP address. The name of the wireless network on the Rose Hill campus is FORDHAMRH, Lincoln Center FORDHAMLC and Westchester FORDHAM400. These names will appear in the SSID or ESSID fields.
IT Policies
Wireless Network users hereby agree that they have read and accept both the:
Information Technology Policy Statement  and the  Wireless Policy Statement.
Troubleshooting
  • Verify wireless access is available in your location: Access Points
  • Verify that the wireless NIC card is inserted into the PCMCIA slot correctly. The indicator lights on the card should be blinking.
  • Verify that there is adequate signal strength. The higher the signal – the faster the network connection. The signal strength icon is usually located on the taskbar.
  • Verify that you are connected to the Fordham Wireless Network. The University network identifiers are FORDHAMRH, FORDHAMLC and FORDHAM400.
