E-mail Policy
Electronic Mail or E-mail is defined as all technologies used to transfer messages or data. Fordham University's e-mail system and electronic communications are to be used only in support of our educational, research and administrative mission and must be in conformity with the Acceptable Use Policy and compliant with all applicable law.
Users have a responsibility to use this resource in an efficient, effective, ethical, and lawful manner. E-mail communications should follow the same standards expected in written business communications and public meetings. Violation of this policy may result in disciplinary action, including possible termination or legal action.
All network and e-mail accounts maintained on Fordham University computing systems are the sole property of Fordham University. Fordham University has the right, but not the obligation, to monitor any e-mail account for legitimate business reasons. Reasons for review include, but are not limited to: reasonable suspicion of a violation of a rule or law or University policy or infringement of third party right; investigation of system problems; litigation or anticipated litigation; or a need to perform work when an employee is not available. To the greatest extent possible in a public setting, individuals' privacy should be preserved. However, there is no expectation of privacy or confidentiality for data, documents, messages and other materials stored or transmitted on University-owned equipment.
Users of the University's e-mail system must understand that most communications created, received or backed-up on the system are considered to be public documents and thus, may be subject to requests for public disclosure. Users should bear in mind that this construction may apply even to e-mails that contain, for example, personal remarks.
