How Can I Protect Myself From Spam?
  • Always use caution when giving out your e-mail address/telephone number/user name.
  • Report the spammer and the spam e-mail to Fordham University using the Anonymous IT Security Incident form.
  • Never buy anything over e-mail messages/instant messages/text messages with links.
  • Never respond to unsolicited messages as this will often let the spammer know that he was successful in reaching you leading to even more spam messages.
  • Do not propagate chain letters or hoaxes.
  • Never click on links that say REMOVE ME or UN-SUBSCRIBE as this may lead you to get more messages again.
  • Never write your e-mail/user name/phone number in websites or forums or any public electronic media services.
  • Never give out your e-mail if you don’t have to.
  • Use anti-spyware software to avoid having your computer becoming infected.

 


How Can I Protect Myself From Phishing Scams?
  • Do not reply to any e-mail soliciting personal identifiable information.
  • Report the phisher and the phishing e-mail to Fordham University using the Anonymous IT Security Incident form. Also be sure to report the incident to the appropriate organization the phisher was claiming to be.
  • Watch out for misspellings in phishing e-mails. More often than not, there will be grammatical or punctual mistakes that will make it obvious.
  • Always use anti-virus and firewall protection. Often viruses, key loggers, and other malicious software can get information on your computer this way. Fordham University offers Symantec for Windows and Mac computers for free.
  • Do not e-mail personal or financial information. To initiate any sort of transaction always use the organization’s website.
  • Never click on links within an e-mail which requests personal identifiable information.
  • Review financial statements as soon as you get them to check for fraudulent charges.
  • Never post or write personal identifiable information on websites as it can easily be used by malicious people to get into your e-mail accounts/bank accounts/etc.
  • Do business with reputable business companies.
  • Always change passwords and take advantage of security features included in the technologies available to you.
  • Be aware of accounting activity by checking with any of the three US credit bureaus.
