HIV INFECTION AND AIDS

The disease AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This virus is passed by the semen, vaginal discharge, or blood of HIV-infected individuals. HIV destroys the cells which defend the body against illnesses.
Disease and infections can invade the body without a fight. The HIV virus may live in the body for years and can be spread to other people even before symptoms appear. For persons living with HIV or AIDS virus, health care services are available including medications which can prolong their life.
