History of Fordham University
EMS

Fordham University Emergency Medical Service (FUEMS) began in 1977 when a few students decided to make a difference.  The Student Emergency Response Group (SERG) started as an organization that provided emergency care to members of the Fordham community.  SERG became officially recognized by the University in 1981.  While on duty, SERG members slept in a small office with a telephone, waiting for it to ring so that they could provide scene stabilization for on campus emergencies until outside agencies arrived and transported patients safely to the hospital.  Their tireless efforts and giving attitudes did not go unnoticed and in 1988 SERG was officially registered with the State of New York Department of Health.  This distinction also provided them with their new name, FUEMS.

FUEMS is an entirely student run club that provides Basic Life Support (BLS) treatment to Fordham’s Rose Hill Campus as well off campus housing and surrounding establishments.  FUEMS transports students, faculty, employees, and guests to and from area hospitals free of charge.  It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week as the primary Emergency Medical Service throughout the academic year.  The organization is strictly volunteer and all members are certified in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.  Each crew is led by a New York State certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).  EMT’s receive extensive training through approximately 200 hours of classroom and practical time as well as emergency room rotations.

About to head into its 28th year at Fordham University , FUEMS looks back on itself to learn from what it has already accomplished and to excel into the future.
