Dear CBA Juniors,
WELCOME TO THE MAJOR YEAR !
Hello Class of ’ 09, -- This is your major year.
Question? Why is the next-to-last year of college commonly known as the “junior year”? It’s not like we hold a junior commencement exercise or distribute little caps & junior gowns so you can look like well dressed junior graduates.
We do, of course, have expectations for “the year before senior year, and after sophomore year,” but they aren’t junior expectations. You are expected to formally “name” your college degree as you move away from core courses and immerse yourself in courses that you get to select. Our expectations clear your path from college life, to life after college. Declaring your formal course of study is not a junior decision, it’s a major decision. And as your major dean, it is my job to help you get through your major year.
In the College of Business, ‘declaring’ one’s major requires a declaration consult meeting with the major dean. I’m honored to shake your hand when you ring the major declaration bell. To date, I‘ve only had the pleasure of doing so with a bout half of you.
I look forward to meeting the rest of you in the weeks to come during your individual major-declaration meetings. Of course, you’re welcome to stop by for an academic consult meeting at any time, regardless of your declaration status.
Additionally, the open-meetings noted below are organized to:
- Help prepare for your major declaration,
- Select the courses that best reflect your interests and your goals,
- Take charge of your emerging professional development,
- Highlight necessary steps for continuing your education.
You are expected to attend the Declaration Preparation Meeting on Wed Oct 10 and at least one of the subject area meetings, per your interest.

All advising sessions will be from 4:00 to 5:00 PM on the dates outlined below. The agenda will focus on the topical areas identified on the right of each date. The advising sessions for each course of study will be repeated on Monday and Tuesday to accommodate your scheduling needs You’ll receive reminders to attend via www.cbaaccess.com and the CBA Newsletter.
