2008 DOCTORAL DISSERTATION COMPETITION

OVERVIEW:

The Fordham University Pricing Center will be sponsoring a doctoral dissertation competition for dissertation proposals dealing with pricing. Candidates must be doctoral students in marketing or a related field, and the focus of their dissertation should relate to how buyers perceive, process and act on pricing information. While the following is a list of potential topics of interest, other related areas of research in behavioral pricing are also eligible.

Bundle pricing
Cross cultural price perceptions
Demographics and price responses
Elasticity estimation
Fairness in pricing
Information processing of price
International pricing
Negotiated pricing
Odd/even pricing
Price interaction & marketing mix
Pricing strategy
Product mix pricing
Promotional pricing
Public policy and price controls
Quality inferences in prices
Reference prices
Internet pricing
Yield pricing

COMPETITION PROCESS:

Candidates must submit a summary of their dissertation proposal by May 1, 2008. Submissions should not exceed 25 double-spaced pages, including references, graphs, and tables. The first page of the submission should include the name and contact information of the candidate as well as that of the candidate’s dissertation advisor. The second page should provide an abstract of the dissertation. The text should clearly communicate the theoretical foundation, hypotheses, and methodological approach of the proposed research.

Submissions must be submitted via email to Prof. Sarah Maxwell at smaxwell@fordham.edu or to Prof. Hooman Estelami at estelami@fordham.edu or .

Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of experts on the behavioral aspects of pricing through a double-blind review process.

AWARD:

The top dissertation will be awarded $1,000.The winner will be notified by July 30th

James Lemieux (University of Texas at Austin; Advisor: Robert Peterson) for "A Model of Negotiated Pricing" (Second Prize)

The winner of the 2006 Fordham University Doctoral Dissertation Competition in Pricing was:

 Dinesh Gauri (State University of New York at Buffalo)
for his dissertation titled
"Revisiting Retail Promotions: Consumers' Efficiency in Availing them and Retailers Success in Using them". 
His dissertation advisor is Prof. Debabrata Talukdar.
