 Welcome

Our Apt. in NYC

Friends

We had an amazing, two week trip to Egypt in the Summer of 2001.  A friend of Michael's from Georgetown, Donna Donella, was on a USAID contract in Cairo, and invited us to spend some time with her.  We also travelled around Egypt, to Luxor, Aswan and Sharm el-Sheik.

On our first night in Cairo, we took a sunset cruise on the Nile River with Donna and some of her friends.

In the Valley of the Kings (West Bank of Luxor), inside a tomb (either Ramses IV or VI).  Peter, a Canadian on our cruise, walks like an Egyptian in the foreground.

The ruins of Karnak Temple, in Luxor.  The man in the lower right, along with a member of the army, were nice enough to show us some great spots for pictures - and then demanded money.

Gwen smokes sheesha outside the Mariott in Sharm el-Sheikh, a resort town on the Sinai Penninsula.  The Red Sea has great diving, but even just snorkeling brought us views of amazing coral and sea creatures (like a giant clam!).

Gwen in the Khan al-Khalili, a bazaar in central Cairo.  We got a sheesha pipe for Michael while in the Khan.

Philae Temple.  The building of the Aswan Dam caused the original island (on the Nile River) to flood over.  International teams moved the temple, brick by brick, to its new home on higher ground.

The tombs, being underground and away from the elements, still had original color.  Here, you can see Horus, the sky god (the hawk), and Anubis, the god of embalming (faint jackal on the left).

Every traveler to Egypt has to ride a camel around the Great Pyramids at Giza.  They have such an awkward gait.

Back in Cairo, the Whirling Dervishes perform.  This is a religious ceremony for a mystic order of Islam (Sufi).

Donna, our hostess, showing us around the Khan.  She loves to visit the market for the many gold and silver sellers.
