Corruption biggest threat to East Timor. According to East Timor,
president, Xanana Gusmao Corruption poses the biggest risk to the future of East
Timor. Gusmao said that “the greatest risk is if our independence
serves one group of people, if corruption, nepotism, collusion are the rule”.
He said also that East Timor could do with more aid
beyond the $150 million a year it was receiving from countries led by Japan,
Australia and
the United States,
but it was up to the Timorese first to prove they could manage the money
wisely. (Reuters Apr

Dili, JAPANESE FIGHTS CORRUPTION IN EAST TIMOR.
In August last year, a UN referendum gave East Timor a choice
between independence and integration with Indonesia;
79 percent of the Timorese voted for independence. The territory
has since been under the administration of UNTAET (U.N. Transitional
Administration in East Timor). Takeshi Kashiwagi is a
Japanese activist, who fought passionately for years for an
independent Timor. Surprisingly,
civilian police under UNTAET command arrested him on Aug. 22 and
charged with defaming and threatening to kill Xanana Gusmao, the independence
movement leader. Kashiwagi denied both charges and began a hunger
strike while in solitary confinement at a detention house. On Sept.
9,
after 18 days in detention, Kashiwagi was released on conditions.
Finally,
the charges were dropped. "I have to be back in East Timor
to raise my voice against corruption within the leadership,"
Kashiwagi said. Kashiwagi claims that someone in the
leadership had allowed Stanley Ho, the dominant
figure in Macao's casino world, to acquire the first-class land where
a five-star hotel stood before it was destroyed by rampaging anti-independence
militias in September last year. (Source: Asahi Evening News,
