PUBLIC WORKS STAFF SUSPENDED IN BRIBES AFFAIR. More than 540 justice officers carried out raids on homes of officials and on the offices of leading construction groups; they seized documents that uncovered evidence of alleged bribery, fraud, forgery, tax evasion and breaches of competition law. As a result three officials of the Dutch public works ministry have been suspended. According to prosecutors, the raids were triggered by a whistle-blower, a former director of a road-building division of Koop Holding. Among the 45 premises raided were offices of nearly all the country's biggest construction groups, including Heijmans, HBG, BAM NBM and Volker Wessels Stevin. (Financial Times, 21 March, 2002, summary by Pavlidis George). Contact for public
prosecutor in the Netherlands is National Office of the Public
Prosecutions Department (OM). E-mail address: The Index of Economic Freedom (by Driscoll-Holmes-Kirkpatrick) for 2001 places Netherlands in the “Free” category with a rank of 8 (Ranks range from 1 for Hong Kong to 155 for North Korea, Wall Street Journal, Nov. 1, 2000). H. D. Vinod’s trimmed correlation analysis indicates that countries free from economic regulation are less corrupt. After allowing for some exceptions by 20% trimming, the correlation is near 0.9. |
