The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)

Is a federal law, which provides regulations, regarding the access, review, amendment, and disclosure of student education records.   The Act also provides a student with the right to inspect and review his/her educational records, to challenge the contents therein, to request a hearing if the outcome of the challenge is unsatisfactory, and to submit explanatory statements for inclusion in the educational records if the student determines that the decision of the hearing panel is unacceptable.  The Act regulates the disclosure of student education records to other parties.

The University, at its discretion, may provide the following Directory Information in accordance with FERPA: student’s name, address, telephone number, date, and place of awards received, the most recent previous educational institution or agency attended by the student, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, the weight and height of members of athletic teams, and other such similar information. A student who wishes the University to withhold Directory Information from disclosure must annually notify the University Registrar within ten days after the first day of class.
