The Fordham University Advanced Certificate in Health Care Ethics is designed to enhance the student’s understanding of and participation in discourse regarding ethically-relevant policy decisions affecting mental and physical health care treatment and research.   Drawing upon the strengths and expertise of Fordham faculty from the humanities and the social and physical sciences, the certificate program exposes students to multidisciplinary perspectives on the religious, moral, sociopolitical, cultural, legal, and professional values underlying current ethical controversies on policy-relevant issues.

The certificate program is designed for teachers, professors, health care providers and administrators, physicians, nurses, ethics committee members, attorneys, social workers, chaplains, graduate students, and others who are interested in learning more about health care issues and health care ethics from a holistic, multi-disciplinary perspective.  The program aims not only to enhance the existing knowledge and skills of individuals already engaged in the above-mentioned administrative, educational, and health care professions, but also to train and prepare individuals who seek the requisite background and qualifications for entering such professions.  The certificate provides students with knowledge and skills to study, inform, and shape a just society that nurtures the full-flourishing of peoples of diverse faiths and cultures necessary for the advancement of the common good.

Requirements:  Administered under the auspices of the Center for Ethics Education, the Advanced Certificate Program’s curriculum consists of four courses, three discipline-based courses and one capstone course.   At least one of the discipline-based courses must be from a humanities discipline, and at least one must be from a social sciences discipline.  The interdisciplinary and team-taught capstone course is taught in conjunction with the Center for Ethics Education Spring Lecture Series.  Students able to complete two courses each semester may complete the Certificate in one academic year. Many students combine their coursework for the Health Care Ethics certificate with study for a graduate degree in a related field and take four semesters to complete the certificate.

Partial tuition scholarships are available for this program.

Admissions:  Applicants must have completed at least 9 credits of graduate study with at least a B-average (3.0).
