The following information is provided for your comparative analysis :
The total number of infected persons world wide with the disease of HIV/AIDS is reported by World Health Organization (July 1,1998) to be 30 million people and the number of persons projected to be infected by the year 2000 is 40 million. AIDS Awareness is of paramount importance to every living human being. AIDS is the epidemic that has the potential of destroying future generations, and limiting the productivity of the total population of earth’s inhabitants.
"As of the end of December, 1996 New York City Office of AIDS Surveillance (OAS) reported 94,001 AIDS cases, accounting for 16% of the cumulative cases reported in the United States to date. Since the inception of the AIDS epidemic in the US, we have seen evolution of the NYC epidemic from occurring in a predominately gay male population to heterogeneous one with 46% of cases occurring in injecting drug users, 34% in men having sex with men and 7% occurring as a result of heterosexual transmission. In New York City, African - Americans account for 40% of reported AIDS cases Hispanic 31%. These racial/ethic groups have been disproportionately affected by the epidemic, especially in women who account for 21% of all adult cases.
African American or Hispanic women account for 86% of women reported with AIDS. As of December 31st ,1996, 1748 pediatric cases of AIDS have been reported in NYC, accounting for 23% of pediatric AIDS cases nationwide. African American and Hispanic children have been disproportionately affected by the AIDS epidemic and account for 92% of all pediatric cases."
The Center for Disease Control reports that the cumulative AIDS infected number of men who have sex with men adult/ adolescent exposure category is 24,146 for the time frame of July 1996- June 1997 the cumulative number of infected men/ adolescents is 50,643. The number of AIDS infection for male injecting drug users are 11,576. During the same time frame the number of reported AIDS infection among females, injecting drug usage was 5,219 through heterosexual contact 5,940. Based on information provided by the New York Council of Smaller Churches Inc. 46% of the new AIDS cases in New York City can be attributed to IV drug user; and more than 85% of these new cases are among people of color.
