The annual Byzantine Symposium at Dumbarton Oaks will be devoted to the theme of AESTHETICS AND PRESENTATION IN BYZANTINE LITERATURE, ART, AND MUSIC. Itwill be directed by Professor John Duffy. In their papers, the seventeen invited speakers will examine a wide range of religious and secular works from the sixth to the fourteenth century, exploring aesthetic issues and questions of form, presentation, and style. Among the topics and subject areas to be discussed are: Devotional Literature and Sacred Music; Epigrams and Art; Aesthetics of Space; Discourse and Narrative in Text and Image; and Secular Aesthetic in Art and Literature.

The Symposium will be held at Dumbarton Oaks from Friday, May 3, to Sunday, May 5,1996. Anyone wishing to attend should fill out and return the enclosed registration card. The fee is $35 ($25 for students), which will cover admission to the sessions and to the cocktail party on-Friday evening. Buffet lunches are offered on a subscription basis for the first two days of the Symposium, at $15 each, payable in advance with the registration fee.

The deadline for registration is April 19, but you are urged to respond immediately, as the maximum number of participants is 200, admitted on a "first come, first served" basis. Your registration will be confirmed.
