Castle Clinton (left) is one of five forts built in the early 1800's to defend the New York Harbor. It now stands in Lower Manhattan as a National Monument and tourist attraction. With the Statue of Liberty in its background, and having been a famous emigrant landing, Castle Clinton can be seen as a symbol of freedom.
In the center of an extremely modernized city, Belvedere Castle (right) attempts to provide a feel of medieval times. It was erected in 1869 as a lookout and, since May 1996, houses the Henry Luce Nature Observatory.
