The above altar derives from the 8th-9th century, Italy, Byzantium. This marble structure displays relief with griffins drinking from a cup and is said to have originated in the old Cathedral of Sorrento.

The sculptured head above is quite similar to the head of King David from Paris in the year 1150. The style comes from Gothic and Romanesque art indicative with the deeply incised eyes as well as the well-defined cheekbones.
