In the above picture, in the upper right hand corner hang the Diptych of the Consul Justinian, from early Byzantium, around 521. Before Justinian was appointed emperor he was consul for the east and had this diptych made for celebration of his consulship. At the four corners are lions heads emerging into a brush of leaves, with the center of each leaf framing an inscription to the senate.
