Medieval Sourcebook:
Bill of Sale, 1248

This document is an example of a bill of sale where the cooper is selling to certain partners a number of empty barrels, presumably for the wine trade.

April twenty-seventh in the year of the Incarnation of the Lord 1248.

I, Raymond Maurel, cooper, sell to you, Andrew Bourguignon and Thomas Duport, son of Hugh Duport, purchasing and agreeing on your own behalf and for your partners in the ship called The Saint-Mandrier one thousand to thirteen hundred barrels of oak at a price of two solidi in royal crowns or Vienne currency for each millerole. Of this price I confess that I have had twenty pounds in royal crowns from you, renouncing, etc.

And I promise that those barrels will be transferred to you, fitted and strengthened with four hoops of oak to each barrel at least, whenever it shall please you, between now and the month of August next coming.

Witnesses, etc.
