Certificate in Documentary Editing

The History Department at Fordham offers the opportunity to learn skills involved in documentary editing, which is a branch of the historical profession. It consists of collecting, transcribing, and annotating primary material in preparation for publication.  Publication may be in the form of hard copy, microfilm/fiche, or web based.  Graduate students in history at Fordham may enter a program that enables them to acquire a certificate in documentary editing, or they may simply intern on a project (outside of Fordham) that provides such skills and experience.

The certificate program requires a semester's internship at one of the metropolitan area projects. Students will receive credit hours for the internship by signing up for a tutorial with a member of the American history faculty to whom the student will report on a regular basis. Any decision concerning an internship at a specific project will be based on the student's interest as well as the needs of the project. Some US history courses include documentary editing as a one-week component.  Some instructors accept term papers that exhibit documentary editing skills instead of or in addition to the usual research paper. The certificate program requires a semester-long internship at an editing project in the metropolitan area, brief training in one or more graduate courses, and a lengthy term paper in at least one of our own graduate courses.
