Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How can
I get a letter of recommendation from my professor?
A. Your
professors would LOVE to write
letters of recommendation for your applications for graduate schools,
prestigious fellowships, study abroad programs, and jobs.
In order to write a really
effective letter, we need YOU to help us.
Please provide your
professors with the following information:
1. A brief written statement of your goals, so that we can refer to them in our
letters.
2. The resumé you are including, and
your applications.
3. A reminder of the classes you took
with us, and the papers you wrote.
4. A list of the extra-curricular
activities you have pursued (internships, volunteer
work,
hobbies, etc.) and achievements, honors, or awards you have received.
5. A list of the addresses to which
these letters should be sent.
6. A FIRM due date for your
letter(s). Give us enough time to write a good letter for
you.
“Immediate” requests may not be possible.
Q.
How can I apply my AP credits toward History requirements?
A. The History Department receives notification regarding your AP exams
and scores. AP credits in European History with a score of 4 or 5 can
replace HSRU 1000 or HSRF 1000: The West from the Enlightenment to the
Present. AP credits in United States History with a score of 4 or 5
can replace HSRU 1100 or HSRF 1100: Introduction to Modern American History.
Q.
Who is my History advisor and when does he/she have office hours?
A. If you have declared a History major, the Undergraduate Chair will
assign you an advisor. Please call (718) 817-3925 to be connected with the
current Undergraduate Chair, who will have the most recent list of advisors.
