  • Tanzilya Oren, LMSW, is a doctoral student at Fordham GSS. Her research interests include welfare policies for families, immigrant and refugee policies, and international social work. She has taught courses in social policy to graduate social work students at Columbia University, New York University and Hunter college. Previously she managed the New Immigrant Center at the English-Speaking Union of the United States. The Center provides a welcoming space for recent immigrants and refugees, free English classes, events, and one-to-one conversation sessions with volunteers. She also worked at the NYS Department of Labor as an Immigrant Workforce Counselor. In 2007-2009 she was in South Africa at CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation working in advocacy projects on protection of civil society and citizen participation in Eurasia and internationally. In her native Uzbekistan Tanzilya worked in the areas of women’s rights and community development.
