Alumni Career Networking Nite - March 27, 2008
Due to renovations at Lowenstein Hall, we held our Annual Alumni
Career Networking Nite at the Cornell Club in midtown Manhattan.
Our speakers were:

Ms. Qi Hang (IPED
Class of '05), Financial Analyst, AIG;

Ms. Sarah Lane
(IPED Class of '05), Economic Growth Research Analyst, USAID Knowledge
Services Center;

Mr. Brendan Walsh
(IPED Class of '05), Macro Analyst, Discovery Capital Management; and
-
Mr. Adam Weiner
(IPED Class of '07), Research Coordinator, Poverty, Gender and Youth Program,
Populatiion Council.
Ms. Hang and Mr. Walsh spoke about their careers in corporate
finance and in hedge funds respectively. Approximately half of our
alumni are employed in the financial services industry. Ms. Lane
spoke about working as a corporate contractor with the US Agency for International
Development as well as life in Washington, DC. About a fourth of
our alumni work in the public sector. And Mr. Weiner spoke about
the opportunities that exist in doing research in the non-profit sector
and how that research informs public policy. About 15% of our alumni
work in the non-profit sector.
Awards
Language Immersion Study Awards

Emerging Markets Travel Scholarships
|
Prof. Themeli gave out all our awards. The Language
Immersion Study Awards went to Rike ($5,200 to study French in West Africa),
Anthony ($5,200 to study French in West Africa), John ($4,200 to study
Portuguese in Brazil), and Patrick ($4,200 to study Spanish in Bolivia).
We also awarded the Emerging Markets Travel Scholarships to Bernice (6
credits tuition scholarship for the Domincan Republic), Joshua (6 credits
tuition scholarship for South Africa), and Stefan (6 credits tuition scholarship
for Argentina).
Arrupe Field Placement Awards

Public Service Field Placement Awards
|
We gave the Arrupe Field Placement Awards to
Jason ($4,000 for summer assignment with Catholic Relief Services in Central
America) and Cheng ($4,000 for summer assignment with FINCA, Village Banking
in Tanzania). Julie also received a Public Service Field Placement
Award ($4,000 for summer assignment with the Landmine Survivors Network
in Bosnia).
Summer Intern Fellowships
|
The first two of our Summer Internship Fellowships were also awarded.
Bridget will be going to Nicaragua to work with FINCA, Village Banking
($3,000) and Mir will be going to Madrid to work at the Philippine Embassy
($3,000).
We thank the Alumni Association for their generous support of
the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
