Foundational Core Courses (3 courses)
Initially in your first semester you will be advised to take three
foundational core courses designed to provide you with a rigorous introduction
to the analytical tools of economics, political science, and quantitative
methods. In economics, if you have limited or no background, you must take
Economic Analysis. If you have at least
intermediate level training in microeconomics and macroeconomics, you may
be able to take a more advanced economics course. In political science
you may enroll in either Comparative Politic
Analysis or Analysis of International
Politics. In quantitative methods we recommend that all students take
Applied Econometrics.
Advanced Core Courses (2 courses)
Building on this solid analytical foundation, you will then normally
take a series of at least two additional core courses that will provide
you with an advanced and systematic integration of political and economic
analysis to study global economic relations and international development
issues. During your second semester you will study global economic relations
by enrolling in International Economic Policy
and the Politics of Global Economic Relations.
In your third and final semester, you may focus on international development
issues by taking Economic Development Policy
and the Political Economy of Development.
Students with sufficient training in economics may take these last two
development core courses in their first semester in place of the foundational
courses in political science and economics.
Electives and Specializations (7 courses)
To complete your course work, you will need to complete seven electives.
You should use at least four of these elective courses to complete one
of our specializations in international banking and finance, international
development studies, international & development economics, or in international
political analysis. These electives can also be used to complete
our advanced certificates in Emerging Markets & Country Risk Analysis
or in Financial Econometrics & Data Analysis. These courses
are normally begun during the second semester of the program.
Internship and Comps
If you lack previous professional experience, you must do an internship.
Internships are usually done during the summer after your first year of
study as well as during your second year of study. The IPED Program offers
a limited number of summer internship stipends
on a competitive basis. Besides regular internships, as a matriculated
student in the IPED program, you will also be eligible to compete for various
Fordham sponsored overseas language immersion study awards and international
travel scholarships (i.e.,
International Peace and Development
Travel Scholarships, Language Immersion Study Awards,
and the Emerging Markets Travel Program). There
are also special Matteo Ricci Summer Fellowships for students who wish
to prepare a Fulbright or other outside prestigious award application.
Normally you will take the comprehensive examination during your third
and final semester of study.
