Eyes to See and Ears to Hear:
Animating for Mission and Imagining a Just World

2013 AJCU Campus Ministry Conference

Fordham University
October 23 – 25, 2013

“We need to discern carefully how we carry out educational and pastoral ministries, especially among youth, in this fast-changing post-modern culture. We need to walk with young people, learning from their generosity and compassion so as to help each other to grow through fragility and fragmentation to joyful integration of our lives with God and with others. Volunteer work with and for the poor helps young people to live in solidarity with others and find meaning in and direction for their lives. Since Christ’s death and resurrection has re-established our relationship with God, our service of faith must lead necessarily to the promotion of the justice of the Kingdom and to the care of God’s creation.

-Decree Three, Challenges to Our Mission Today: Sent to the Frontiers
35th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus

The Office of Campus Ministry and Division of Mission and Ministry at Fordham University cordially invites you to attend this year’s AJCU Campus Ministry Conference from October 23rd – 25th in New York City.

The Conference:

The theme for this year’s AJCU Campus Ministry Conference is “Eyes to See and Ears to Hear: Animating for Mission and Imagining a Just Word”.  This year’s conference will create a space where participants can have an honest, creative and reflective conversation about the graces and challenges of ministry, and enter into a process of prayerful and responsive discernment for the future.

Utilizing the results of a pre-conference Campus Ministry/Mission and Ministry survey that was conducted in summer 2013, the conference will work to address key topics identified by respondents including:

  • LGBT Ministry
  • Authentic Relationships in Service and Immersion Programs
  • Diversity and Interfaith Ministry
  • Student Leadership
  • Outreach to Key Populations

The conference will begin with a keynote from Fr. James Martin, S.J., Editor at Large of America Magazine, author of “The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything, a Spiritual Guide for Real Life”, “
Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor and Laughter are at the Heart of the Spiritual Life”, and a new e-book “Together on Retreat: Meeting Jesus in Prayer”. Fr. Martin has also been featured on the Colbert Report on Comedy Central, and also holds the distinction of being the unofficial chaplain to “Colbert Nation”.

The conference will also feature a variety of presenters including:

  • Dr. Elizabeth A. Johnson, C.S.J., Distinguished Professor of Theology, Fordham University
  • Dr. James McCartin, Director, Center for Religion and Culture, Fordham University
  • Dr. Jeannine Hill Fletcher, Faculty Director, Service Learning, Fordham University
  • Mr. Bill McGarvey, Director, Good Thief Media Consulting, Contributing Author, America Magazine
  • Ms. Sofia Bautista Pertuz, Director, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Fordham University
  • Mr. James Killoran, Director, Habitat for Humanity Westchester, Hurricane Sandy Solidarity Program
  • Mr. Nicholas Napolitano, Assistant for Social Ministries, New England, Maryland and New York Province, Society of Jesus

With an attentiveness to the call to the frontiers put forward in the Documents of the 35th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus, the conference will also include a workshop component for each breakout session. Utilizing this unique format, participants will have the opportunity to workshop specific ideas and develop them for implementation in their campus communities.

The planning committee realizes that October is a very busy time of year and that New York involves significant travel and expense, however we have worked hard to secure a reasonable conference hotel rate and registration fee, and have worked to put together a gathering that will be both a unique New York experience and worthwhile.

We look forward to seeingyou in October!
