Jumpstart is a national early education organization that helps young children from low-income neighborhoods develop the language, literacy and social skills they need to be successful in Kindergarten, setting them on a path to close the achievement gap.

Fordham Jumpstart volunteers join teams serving children ages 3-5 in Bronx public schools and early learning centers. This is an excellent opportunity for any student who wants a hands-on experience making a difference in the lives of young children!

Course Credit for Service Learning
Students wishing to integrate their academic studies with their Jumpstart service are encouraged to do so!  This year, there are two service learning options for combining your coursework with Jumpstart:
  • Interdisciplinary Seminar: Apply what you learn in one of your existing courses (with your professor's permission) to your service with Jumpstart while earning a free additional course credit. The Interdisciplinary Semina takes place on five Thursdays in each semester 1-2:30pm, and are on topics ranging from Bronx community history to social justice. Stop by the Dorothy Day Center in McGinley 101 to pick up a copy of the application and speak to a staff member at the beginning of the semester.
  • Integrated Course: Enroll in PSYC2700: Infant and Child Development (Service Learning) to apply what you will learn about how young children think, learn, and grow to your service in the classroom!  E-mail Professor Joshua Brown at to enroll in his class, which meets Tuesdays and Fridays 10:00-11:15am for fall semester. Spots are limited, so act NOW.
