Fordham University is steeped in a tradition of service and social justice. Fordham students, faculty, staff and administrators have and continue to engage in partnership with community organizations to make our world a better place. If you are considering Fordham University, be assured that there are lots of opportunities for you to learn from, engage in and reflect on your experiences in service with the surrounding communities as a volunteer, urban intern, work study student or service-learner.
We encourage accepted first year students to consider applying to the Urban Plunge Program. In this pre-orientation program, students have the opportunity to learn more about the communities surrounding Fordham.
"Urban Plunge was not only a great opportunity and experience to learn about the social justice issues that exist and are prevalent locally in New York City, but it also showed us the importance of our awareness and action. Fordham is our school; New York City is our campus. Urban Plunge initiated us, as freshmen, into the school with a strong focus on the importance of social awareness, advocacy, and action to the Fordham Lincoln Center community, based in the heart of New York City. In addition to learning about and exploring the many areas of social injustice in New York City, I found Urban Plunge a perfect start to my freshman year and college career at Fordham. It was a great way to meet and connect with others, both upperclassmen/women and fellow freshmen, and to adjust to college at Fordham. Our Urban Plunge group was able to grow closer by sharing stories and experiences. Urban Plunge reminded me that everyone has a story and different life experiences, and I think it had excellent lessons and reminders for everyone as we plunged into a new and diverse campus and environment of people, a school community that values social justice, and the next chapter of our lives at Fordham."
