Project Description: |
This project is an immersion experience which aims to give us a better understanding of the unique way of life in Bethel, Alaska. In Alaska, the team works with a variety of groups in the Bethel community, including the Catholic Church, the Bethel Alternative Boarding School, the Bethel Community Services Foundation (a philanthropy group), the Tundra Women's Coalition (women's/children's shelter and domestic violence/sexual abuse center), the Native Council Senior Center and the Public Defender's Office. The Alaska team strives to arm itself with knowledge about the substance and domestic abuse issues that plague Bethel. The project also learns about Native Alaskan culture through participation in Yupik dance, practicing Alaskan beading, and fishing in the Kuskokwim River. |
Estimated Cost: |
$1,200
"'Quyana' is the Yup'ik Eskimo word for 'thanks.' Reflecting on my immersion project, experiencing both the struggles and strengths of these Native Alaskans, I am filled with such an overwhelming sense of gratitude for having had such a profound experience and felt the warmth and bonds of such an amazing, unforgettable community. Quyana Alaska." -Meg Hannigan FCRH '08
