Orthodoxy in America: Orthodox Studies Minor

Interdisciplinary Minor in Orthodox Christian Studies

George Demacopoulos & Aristotle Papanikolaou, Directors

Beginning in the Fall of 2007, Fordham College of Rose Hill will offer an interdisciplinary minor in Orthodox Christian Studies.  Students interested in the minor should contact either of the program directors at demacopoulos@fordham.edu or papanikolaou@fordham.edu.

Requirements for Minor:

The minor consists of two required courses (RS*U:2720 Byzantine Christianity and RS*V:4002 Orthodox Christian Ethics), which, in general, will be offered by the Theology Department every year.  The minor will also require four electives, subject to the following provisions:

  • 1 elective should come from Art History
  • 1 elective should come from History or Philosophy
  • students may take no more than 2 electives from any one discipline
Students may apply courses that meet general college requirements or other major/minor requirements towards the completion of their minor.  For example, RS*U:2720 Byzantine Christianity currently fulfills the sophomore theology core requirement.

Should faculty sabbaticals or other developments create a situation that limits the availability of courses, the director of the program has the authority to amend the guidelines regarding the distribution of electives.

Available Courses:

The university currently offers courses in many disciplines that directly or indirectly explore aspects of Orthodox culture and tradition.  Based on current course offerings, the following courses qualify as electives for the minor in Orthodox Christian Studies.  It is presumed that additional courses would be added to this list as existing or new faculty expand course offerings.  It is likewise presumed that courses from other departments might be added (e.g. if a member in the Political Science department developed a course on the Balkans).
