BEFORE
you
start:

PDF
versus
HTML
The MathForLife web site is designed to be accessed interactively through a standard web browser: it works well with both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, versions 3.x or later. However, the HTML format used by current browsers doesn't allow you to view any but the simplest mathematical text. Instead, MathForLife delivers it as a collection of PDF files or Portable Document Format files. PDF is an open platform independent file format developed by Adobe Systems, Inc. which permits the kind of sophisticated typography and graphics needed to display mathematical text. Web browsers can't read PDF files but Adobe makes available a free tool called Acrobat ReaderTM which can. To obtain a free copy of Acrobat Reader or to configure the Reader for use with your web browser, please go to the Acrobat setup page.

You'll need to be properly configured before you can follow the links below into the sample chapter. If these links cause your browser to start downloading a file instead of displaying it, you're not correctly configured and should visit the Acrobat setup page.

Getting
started
with the
sample
chapter

CHelp!   The sample chapter contains the complete text of chapter two of the course Time is money on mathematics of finance.

Before entering the mathematical portions of the sample chapter, I'd suggest glancing at the online Help! page via the  ?  button at the left. It explains all the interactive features of MathForLife and will teach you how to recognize and use the embedded hyperlinks and other navigational aids including the on-line Contents, Index, Tools and Tests. You'll also find information about many other features of the site(type styles, colors, zoomable graphics, numbering...) which make it the material to use and understand.

You needn't try to learn everything at once: Help! accessible from a navigation bar at the top right of every page in the site so you can return to it at any time.

Contents   Once you've looked over the Help! page, you're ready to head to the Contents using the button at the left. This file contains a copy of the Table of Contents of the sample chapter in which each line links you to the corresponding page in the site. You'll always have immediate access to the Contents page from the navigation bar at the top right of every page. So jump in and experience MathForLife!
