Alan's Marketplace, 27 Columbus Ave, btwn 60th & 61st St. 212-265-5886. Take-out sandwiches and salads, right across the street. Inexpensive. In nice weather, bring your food back to Fordham and eat outside in the Plaza.

Lowenstein Cafe, 113 West 60th and Columbus Ave. Cafeteria on the Plaza level of the main building at Fordham's Lincoln Center. Open Thursday and Monday only.

Rich and Famous Deli, 1841 Broadway at West 60th Street. 212-333-7424. Limited seating, but cheap and fast.

Rosa Mexicano, 61 Columbus at 62nd Street. 212-977-7700. Superior Mexican food from a long-established New York place. Guacamole made tableside. Not inexpensive.

Gabriels, 11 W. 60th, between Columbus and Broadway. 212-956-4600. Good Italian food, but expensive. No lunch Saturday or Sunday.

Whole Foods Market, 10 Columbus Circle, Time Warner Center, 212-823-9600. Natural food store that also sells soups, salads, sandwiches, and various hot foods. Seating available, but crowded at lunch time. Inexpensive.

The Flame Restaurant, 893 9th Ave. @58th St., across from Hudson Hotel. Diner food, good breakfast, inexpensive.

Olympic Flame Diner, 200 W. 60th St., at Amsterdam (10th) Ave., Classic NY Greek diner. Good breakfast. Inexpensive.

Bar Masa, 10 Columbus Circle @ 60th St. Time-Warner Center, 4th floor. 212-823-9800. Sushi, moderate to expensive. Closed Sunday.

Sapphire, 1845 Broadway, btwn 60th and 61st. 212-245-444. Indian, with an all-you-can eat buffet. Moderate. No Sunday lunch.

Shun Lee Cafe, 43 West 65th St (between Columbus and Central Park West). 212-595-8895. Classy Chinese, the cafe of the elevated Shun Lee. A lunch menu is available, average $20-$25 per person.

Le Pain Quotidien, 60 W 65th St., btwn Central Park West & Columbus Ave. Soups, salad, sandwiches. Also serves breakfast. Inexpensive.

Ollie's Noodle Shop and Grille, 1991 Broadway, between 67th and 68th Streets, 212-595-8181. Enormous selection of Chinese food including Cantonese, Szechuan, and Hunan specialties.

Siam Inn, 854 8th Ave., between 51 and 52nd Streets. 212-757-4006. Solid reputation for good Thai food. Moderately priced with some early "theatre" specials. No lunch service on Saturday or Sunday.

Ariana Afghan Kebab, 787 Ninth Ave, between 51st and 52nd Streets. 212-262-0065. Offers a variety of Afghan dishes. Inexpensive. Bring your own wine or beer.

Puttanesca, 859 9th Ave @ 56th St.. 212-581-4177. Large popular spot with moderately priced Italian fare. Good antipasti, salads and pasta; large portions.

Matt's Grill, 932 Eighth Ave. between 55th and 56th. 212-307-5109. Good American bar food. Inexpensive.

La Boite en Bois, 75 West 68th Street, between Columbus and Central Park West. 212-874-2705. Tiny and crowded, but the French bistro food is very good (though a bit on the pricey side).

Empire Szechuan Kyoto, 193 Columbus, between 68th and 69th Streets. 212-496-8778. Enormous menu; less elegant than Shun Lee but also less expensive; commands a loyal clientele.

Lenge Japanese Restaurant, 202 Columbus near 69th Street. 212-799-1601. Dependable sushi but often crowded. Moderate. Opens Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Westside Brewing Co., 340 Amsterdam Ave @76th Street. 212-721-2161. Local microbrewery, reliable and good value.

Ruby Foo's, 2182 Broadway @ 77th Street. 724-6700. Fun, spectacular décor. Pan-Asian food, party atmosphere, moderate prices.
