2nd Biennial Graduate Student Conference
Fordham University, New York

“Metaphysics and Critique”
March 5-6, 2004

“What is being?  What does it mean to be?  This is the question of metaphysics.  It is old beyond age, newer than the most novel thought.  It calls to us from the dawn of human mindfulness; it calls for its renewal again...”  By once again recalling us to this fundamental question, Professor Desmond invites us to take up the issues of metaphysics:  What is metaphysical thinking?  Can the critique of metaphysics be overcome?  Should it be?  What are the fundamental categories; and what are the senses of being?  Are there origins?  Does the universe have a beginning or an end?  What are things, and how are they intelligible?  Is there a relation between a self and being?  What are truth, goodness, and unity?

By bringing together a plurality of philosophical perspectives addressing these issues, the conference hopes to encourage the renewal of metaphysical thinking.  The Fordham Philosophical Society presents papers from a number of philosophical schools and traditions –after all, Platonists, Aristotelians, Scholastics, Rationalists, Empiricists, German Idealists, Phenomenologists, Pragmatists, Post-Modernists, Process Philosophers, Critical Theorists, and contemporary Analytic Philosophers have all offered rich reflections on the issues of metaphysics and critique.
