Degree Requirements for
the M.A.P.R. Program
• 36 hours of course work
(12 courses), including at least
• four author courses
(Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, and Aquinas);
• two
historical survey courses (Classical Modern and Nineteenth Century);
• two seminars in contemporary philosophy (elective);
• two ethics courses (Natural Law Ethics and Modern Ethical
Theories); and
• a two-semester integration seminar.
• A cumulative grade point
average of at least 3.0 in coursework. Only six credits
of 2.0 (C) will be credited toward the degree. Twelve credits of C
eliminate a student from the program.
• An oral
comprehensive examination before a board of examiners consisting of
three faculty members.
• A reading knowledge,
demonstrated either in course work or by departmental exam, of one
language other than English, normally either French or German, though
substitutions (e.g., Greek or Latin) may be approved in light of a
student’s research needs. The courses satisfying the language
requirement are FRGA 5090 (French) or GEGA 5090 (German), or above.
