Aristotle and Beyond (PHLU 3521)

Astrid O'Brien

When Dante meets Aristotle in The Divine Comedy, he calls him "the Master of those who know," reflecting his dominance as "the philosopher." Yet, Aristotle has been under attack since the Renaissance. This course will therefore ask whether Aristotle has anything still to say to us. We will survey Aristotle's philosophical thought - his philosophy of nature, art, and his ethical and political theory. We will also read various neo-Aristotelians in considering the development and appropriation of Aristotelian thought by later philosophers.
