What do we owe nature? This course will explore our practices and obligations with respect to the natural world. Areas of study for this course will include debates concerning pollution and consumption, animal rights and animal welfare, habitat and wilderness preservation, sustainable and unsustainable practices. We will be looking to answer questions of personal responsibility (Should I eat meat? Should I recycle?), as well as questions of social and political responsibility (How is social change possible? How should law defend and protect the environment?). These issues will be presented in terms of the traditional and philosophical movements within environmentalism, like deep ecology, ecofeminism, and environmental justice. The scope of consideration for these issues will be local and global, national and international.
