Philosophy of Mind
(PHLV 3942)

William Jaworski

“The mind-body problem” is an expression that refers loosely to a set of philosophical puzzles that arise in the context of trying to integrate two images we have of ourselves: the image of ourselves as free, rational beings with beliefs, desires, hopes, joys, fears, loves, etc; and the image of ourselves as complex biochemical systems whose behaviors are conditioned by the interactions of our nervous systems with the environment. Students examine some of these puzzles and then consider whether any of the purported solutions to them work.
