Faculty Searches

The department is pleased to announce the hiring of Dr. Stephen Grimm—a graduate of Notre Dame and currently teaching at the University of Montana—and Dr. Samir Haddad—a graduate of Northwestern and currently a Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellow here at Fordham. Both appointment begin in the fall of 2008.

 

Faculty Appointments

New faculty appointments for the academic year 2006–2007 are:

Jeffrey Flynn joins the department as an Assistant Professor. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University, and he has taught at Middlebury College before coming to Fordham. Professor Flynn’s area of specialization is critical theory.

Allan Hazlett also joins the department as an Assistant Professor. He received his Ph.D. from Brown University, and he taught the past two years at Texas Tech University. Professor Hazlett’s area of specialization is analytic metaphysics and epistemology.

Brian Johnson is our third new Assistant Professor. His Ph.D. is from the University of Chicago. Professor Johnson’s area of specialization is ancient ethics.

Natural Law Colloquium

This spring’s Natural Law Colloquium will occur on Wednesday, April 16. The featured speaker is Professor Patrick Kelley of Southern Illinois University. Further details can be found here.

 

Dissertation Defenses

David Becker defended his dissertation titled The Question of Coherence in Schopenhauer's System: An Examination of the Doctrine of the Will's Self-Overcoming on Monday, October 29 at 3:15 pm in Duane 156. Mr. Becker's mentor was Professor Michael Baur. Professors Dominic Balestra and Ann Murphy were the dissertation readers, and Professors William Jaworski and Judith Green were examiners. Edgar Devina defended his dissertation titled The Ground of the Normative Force of Discourse: A Lonerganian Reconstruction of Habermas’s Communicative Rationality (abstract) on Friday, February 22 at 4:00 pm in Duane 352. Mr. Devina’s mentor was Dr. James Marsh. Professors Dominic Balestra and Judith Green were the readers, and Professors Michael Baur and Jeffrey Flynn were the examiners.

Jane Dryden defended her dissertation titled Relational Autonomy: Bridging a Gap Between Feminism and German Idealism (abstract) on Tuesday, March 4 at 12:30 pm in Duane 352. Ms. Dryden’s mentor was Dr. Michael Baur. Professors Merold Westphal and John Davenport were the readers, and Professors John Drummond and Ann Murphy were the examiners.

James Stone defended his dissertation titled The Foundation of Universal and Necessary Propositions in Select Writings of St. Thomas Aquinas (abstract) on Thursday, April 3 at 3:00 pm in Duane 352. Mr. Stone’s mentor was Professor Joseph Koterski, S.J. Professors Christopher Cullen, S.J. and Giorgio Pini were the readers, and Professors Daryl Tress and Dana Miller were the examiners.

Joseph Trabbic defended his dissertation titled Aquinas, God, and Ontotheology (abstract) on Monday, April 14 at 2:00 pm in Keating 124. Mr. Trabbic’s mentor was Professor Joseph Koterski, S.J. Professors Merold Westphal and Christopher Cullen, S.J. were the readers, and Professors Norris Clarke, S.J. and Ann Murphy were the examiners.

David Borman will defend his dissertation titled The Organization of Enlightenment: Habermas, Socialization, and the Possibility of Autonomy (abstract) on Wednesday, May 7 at 2:00 pm in Keating 124. Mr. Borman’s mentor is Professor James Marsh. Professors Merold Westphal and John Davenport are the readers, and Professors Jeffrey Flynn and Ann Murphy are the examiners.

Daniel Breyer will defend his dissertation titled Cognitive Agency and Belief Ownership: Rethinking Epistemic Justification (abstract) on Thursday, May 8 at 1:00 pm in the Philosophy Conference Room. Mr. Breyer’s mentor is Professor John Greco. Professors John Davenport, Bryan Frances and Ernest Sosa (Rutgers) are the readers, and Professors Allan Hazlett and William Jaworski are the examiners.
