Program Overview

Philosophy has been the central discipline in Jesuit undergraduate education since the founding of the first Jesuit college over 450 years ago. As a flagship department, Philosophy offers unique resources to the undergraduate. The faculty of the Philosophy Department is among the most distinguished in the University. Twenty-three full-time professors offer one of the richest array of courses available in any major to meet diverse student interests. Every professor, including those involved in the department's strong graduate programs (for the MA and Ph.D. degrees), is fully involved in and committed to undergraduate education. Virtually all courses upper-level courses offered by the department are small seminars led directly by full-time professors. Thus majoring or minoring in philosophy provides the sort of intensive educational experience most valued in the Jesuit tradition. Students are encouraged not simply to get a degree, but to understand and seek intellectual excellence, the "magis" or highest potential.

All majors also have open to them the full range of offerings at both the Rose Hill and Lincoln Center campuses. Most importantly, since Philosophy is a large department with a relatively small number of majors, each student in the major can receive a much greater level of individual attention than is possible in the most oversubscribed departments. This focus on getting to know each student personally helps explain why our Philosophy majors do so well both at Fordham and in careers and graduate study following the B.A. degree.
