Philosophy majors complete a minimum of eight courses beyond the freshman and sophomore core courses
(PH*U 1000 and 1100). Since the department offers a number of Senior Values seminars, one of the eight upper-level courses may be the course taken to fulfill the Senior Values requirement (but a major need not chose a Values Seminar in Philosophy).
Distribution Requirements
The eight upper-level courses for the major will include at least
• three historical courses, covering at least three of the four main periods in philosophy (ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary), AND two systematic courses, covering at least two of the four main areas in philosophy (metaphysics, human nature, epistemology, and practical philosophy)
OR
• three systematic courses, covering at least three of the four main areas in philosophy, AND two historical courses, covering at least two of the four main periods in philosophy.
Majors planning to pursue graduate work in Philosophy are also advised to take Introduction to Symbolic Logic.
