Hospitailty Institute Graduate Student Internships
The Master of Science in Hospitality (MSH) program at Fordham HI include a 1.5-credit internship course option to allow students to earn credit while working under the direct supervision of hospitality industry professionals.
Credit Internships
Please know that there are guidelines for credit internships, as outlined below.
- Credit internship opportunities are available to MSH students who have completed at least two semesters of course work.
- Credit internships are 1.5 credits. Students are registered for the elective course: Internship REAL6020. Students are charged regular, full tuition for these 1.5 credits.
- Each intern is assigned an HI instructor who will oversee academic assignments for this course.
- Students regularly meet with their assigned instructor, and must complete a final, analytical research paper. The instructor will guide the structure of the paper.
- Students may intern a maximum of 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters. More hours are possible during the Summer semester, if you are taking no more than two classes.
Student Requirements
- Applications must be received at least 20 days prior to the start of the semester. Internships must be completed in the same semester in which the student receives credit.
- Required GPA=minimum 3.5
- Applicants must have already completed at least two semesters of course work.
- Three-part Application includes Student section, Company section, and Research Proposal.
- Internship should be a NEW position. Internship applications cannot be accepted for assignments related to the applicant’s former job.
- Applications cannot be considered for internships that involve duplicative work/skills that applicant has already developed. A significant amount of new learning must be involved.
- The Supervisor at the Company cannot be an immediate family member of the student applicant.
- The proposed internship must have a level of graduate academic rigor to justify the credit hours.
- Students may complete only ONE Internship course towards their degree.
- Applicant must have, or have the ability to obtain, legal authorization to work/intern in the U.S.A.
Credit Internships – How to Apply
- Submit three-part application at least 20 days prior to the start of the semester. This deadline is required to allow application review/approval and assignment of an instructor.
- Application has three parts: Fordham
1. Student Internship Application (include current resume)
2. Company Application
3. Research Proposal outlining what aspects of the internship the student intends to investigate in
the analytical paper
- Submit all documents to Sal Gulino [email protected] at least 20 days prior to the start of the semester.
- If approved, the student will be registered and assigned an instructor, who will help the student refine the research proposal and goals, and assign related readings. Please note: Credit internships
follow the same departmental drop/add procedures and dates like any other class. - International students with an approved offer must contact the Office of International Students to complete CPT documentation.
Internship Company Requirements
- Academic Rigor. The prospective company must be willing and able to provide a robust learning opportunity.
- Commitment. Company must be committed to the learning experience, and understand their responsibility to the intern and Internship program.
- Supervision. The intern must be supervised and regularly evaluated by someone who has significant experience and qualifications in the specific field.
- Rotation/Progression. During the internship, interns must either rotate to a new area, progress to new phases of a project, or take ownership of a project at the company.
- Stipend. The company must disclose whether they can offer a stipend and/or expense reimbursements to the intern (recommended).
- Dates/Hours. The company must agree to the 20-hour per week maximum for Fall and Spring.
