Each College at Fordham University offers academic advising for their students. Class deans for Fordham College at Rose Hill (FCRH), Fordham College at Lincoln Center (FCLC), and the Gabelli School of Business (GSB) assist students with general advising regarding the core curriculum, exploring a major or minor discipline of study, discussion about planning students’ academic careers and future aspirations, course registration, course and university withdrawal, internal and external transfers, transfer and test credit, and absence reports. They also assist students experiencing academic difficulty and personal issues that may be impacting their performance in class.
In Fordham College at Rose Hill, each class has its own class dean who serves in a broad advisory capacity for students In addition, all FCRH freshman are participate in the Core Advising Program, which pairs FCRH freshmen with full-time faculty and/or administrators who serve as primary advisors and with upper-class students who serve as Faculty Advisor Student Assistant (FASA). Meetings are held with their students individually and in groups throughout their first academic year. Core Advisors continue to work with undeclared first-semester sophomores. While juniors and seniors receive most of their advising from faculty in their major department/program, class deans continue to advise students on the completion of the core curriculum and graduation requirements.The Gabelli School of Business has a dean for each of the four classes, plus additional deans for transfer students, business minors, and evening students. These class deans offer a full range of academic counseling. They help students choose a major, minor, and/or area of concentration, plan their curriculum, and register. The deans are also available to discuss academic issues, time management, study habits, clubs, and other matters that improve academic and social interactions. The deans work in conjunction with other specialized staff to offer a full suite of personal and professional development workshops, internships, and service activities.
Each class in the traditional GSB day program has its own dean who is the student’s primary advisor for that particular year. There is also an advisor for all students in the GSB evening program. Class deans assist all GSB students in choosing their courses; planning their curricula; investigating concentrations, majors, specializations, and minors; registering; and anything relating to their educational experience in GSB. In addition, the Gabelli School of Business offers Pre-Professional advising via a Director of Personal & Professional Development, as well as through individual Pre-Professional advisors in Accounting, Finance, and Marketing.
In Fordham School of Professional and Continuing Studies,, the deans provide assistance and clearance for the student’s first two semesters of study. For the third and succeeding registration, consultation with the deans and faculty is encouraged, but optional. Once a major is declared, the student meets with their faculty advisor in their major department/program. In addition, deans and faculty conduct workshops on topics of interest to students, such as study skills, time management, interest assessment, major selection, etc.
