Alumna Pledges $75,000 for
Elizabeth A. Johnson Scholarship Fund

Valerie Vincent (GAS ’99), president of the Clare Rose Foundation, recently pledged $75,000 in support of the scholarship fund that bears the name of her former teacher and Fordham’s Distinguished Professor of Theology, Sister Elizabeth A. Johnson, C.S.J.

Through her charitable organization, Vincent will contribute the funding over the course of the next five years. The $15,000 scholarship is awarded to a full- or part-time student in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences’ Doctoral Program in Theology. Candidates must demonstrate financial need, prove his or her academic merit, and must either be at the point of writing or defending his or her dissertation. The recipient is selected by the scholarship’s namesake, Sister Elizabeth Johnson, C.S.J.

“When Valerie was a master’s student, she won my praise for writing in ‘lucid terms’ that showed ‘excellent understanding,’ as a research paper she recently resurrected bears witness,” said Sister Johnson. “Now her wisdom shows again in the clear way she sees the importance of women studying theology and in the generous measures she has taken to support the younger generation.”

Vincent initiated the scholarship fund last November with a $15,000 gift on her behalf from the foundation.

“It was a luxury and a privilege for me to be able to go back to school,” said Vincent. “It is also a privilege to be able to participate indirectly in the good work being done in theology by women.”
