Longtime Faculty and Administrators Honored
On March 30, the Fordham community gathered in the Pope Auditorium at the Lincoln Center campus to pay tribute to 27 longtime faculty members and administrators during the annual University Convocation.
The Bene Merenti Medal, instituted at the first convocation in 1931, and the Archbishop Hughes Medal honor faculty members and members of the administration who have been with the University for 20 or 40 years. The Archbishop Hughes Medal is given in memory of its namesake’s deft abilities in administration and his dedication to the quest for truth through education.
The Rev. Joseph A. O’Hare, S.J., University president, formally thanked the medallists for their combined 620 years of service. Father O’Hare, who will retire in June after 19 years of service, joked that if his successor the Rev. Joseph M. McShane, S.J., serves an equivalent term, Father O’Hare would be both well rested and happy to return to the presidency in time to collect his 20-year medal.
