F.U.R.F.C. vs. Scranton
Game Summary |
At 5:00 PM on Friday Night, the men of the Fordham University Rugby Football Club reported to Murphy’s field for a match against Scranton University. The air was frigid, the weather: inclement. The intermittent snowflakes were portentous of the snowstorm to come. Scranton’s bus, belied by traffic and faulty directions, didn’t arrive until hours after the scheduled kick-off time. The temperature dropped, the fan base dwindled, but the Fordham team lay in wait.
Scranton, eager to play after being cooped up, came firing out of the gates. Early in the first half, they had FU. pinned within their own 20 meter line. Fordham’s defense was stalwart, however, allowing no points during Scranton’s prolonged goal line stance. At half time, the score was frozen at zero.
The second half, in true Fordham Rugby fashion, was another story all together. After some half-time motivation, Fordham went on the offensive. Michael “O.C.” O’Connell struck first blood, scoring the first try of his prestigious career. After a frustrating flurry of goal line attempts, Captain Evan Sheha took matters into his own hands, thrashing his way to Fordham’s second try. Sheha also added two long range kicks.
Jonathan “Future” Schmitz marshaled the defense, playing “D” as tight as his undersized, white shorts. A frazzled Timothy “No Name” Schwartz was removed from the game due to minor head trauma. The EMT on hand asked Tim if he knew his name and confusion arose as Timothy insisted that he was fine but that he had “no name.”
As the snowfall began to accelerate, so too did the Fordham onslaught. Mike Flynn and "Egon" both contributed dazzling breakout runs. Perhaps no rush was as stand-out as Eddie Cullen’s, who, late in the 2nd half, stormed the length of the field, mercilessly stampeding over any defender unfortunate enough to cross his path. The marathon culminated in a snow-slide into the try zone. The A-Side game ended 19-0.
The B-Side game was truly a baptism by fire. As the “Killer B’s” took the field, the snow had reached a fever pitch. Many Fordham newcomers battled in the blizzard, and were able to stifle Scranton University, rendering their trip completely fruitless. The final score of the B-Side game was 0-0.
