The Sailing Association assists the team in a number of financial and non-financial ways, e.g., as chaperones or host/chaperones at away regattas; providing recruitment leads; serving as Race Committee, and assisting our student-athletes obtain internships and other employment opportunities.

In 2005, the Sailing Association initiated an effort to create a $1 million Endowment. The purpose was to establish a fund to finance the recruitment and continued employment of a professional coach and to assist with the periodic replacement of boats, as needed. Over $300,000 has been generated.

In 2010, to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of its founding and the 10th Anniversary of the rebirth of the Sailing team, the Sailing Association hosted a gala dinner at the New York Yacht Club in Manhattan. Mike Mullarney was Dinner Chairman. Among the 165 guests were Steve Breines, Commodore, Morris Yacht & Beach Club; alumnus Tom Harrington, currently Commodore, New York Yacht Club; Joseph M. McShane, S. J., President of Fordham University, who honored us with his welcoming remarks, and Guest Speaker, US Sailing President Gary Jobson, who topped off the evening’s festivities with a dynamic presentation.

A three-month, $100,000 fundraising campaign to finance the purchase of new boats, sails, dollies and a power boat was initiated prior to the dinner, and in combination with the dinner proceeds, netted $153,000 for the program.

During the dinner, Mr. Mullarney announced the creation of the Fordham Sailing Hall of Fame. The following six sailors became charter members.

CO-FOUNDERS: Jean “Jack” Liegey ’52, Louis T. Piccoli ’52, Richard J. Russo ’52 and John F. Schmitt ’53. Messrs. Liegey & Schmitt were inducted posthumously.

TEAM CAPTAIN and MAISA PRESIDENT: Charles “Bud” McEntee ‘72

TEAM CAPTAIN: Katherine G. Murphy ‘06

In December 2011, at the end-of-season luncheon attended by 59 Team and Sailing Association members, at Morris Yacht & Beach Club, former Team Captain Nathan B. Powell '06 became the seventh member of the Afterguard to be inducted into the Fordham Sailing Hall of Fame.

Following the 60/10 Anniversary Dinner at the New York Yacht Club, Dennis Ruppel '68 and Mike Mullarney '68 became Commodore and Vice Commodore respectively of the Sailing Association. Under their guidance and leadership, a "Coach Fund" was established to finance the employment of a full-time, professional coach over a multi-year period of time. This is an on-going process, which complements fundraising efforts for both capital and annual operating expenses.
